You will be providing 17 weeks/year of day time cover to the principal single-handed GP, in mutually agreed and if desired flexible length of blocks. There is no out of hours requirement, though out of hour shifts and plenty of locum work are locally available. The consulting day is generally quiet and you can arrange the specifics of your consulting hours and conditions to a large extent yourself (within the parameters of necessity and demand)
Any applicant is expected to be medically well rounded, self sufficient and happy to work on their own within a small friendly multi-skilled team. Own interests can be pursued within or without the practice. Emergency training will be provided if not up to date. Some of the past post holders are available and happy to give their own view of the practice and post.
Joint applications for job share or other suggestions to make it flexible for the applicant(s) are welcome.
The practice is small (around 500 registered patients), fully dispensing, largely paperless, uses EMIS PCS and is supported by a varied and growing primary care team. There is a NHS dentist visiting regularly. Several staff are trained health care assistants.
Thursday afternoon the practice is routinely covered by a neighbouring practice.
Visiting is restricted to the truly housebound or palliative care. We also do dual response calls with ambulances for 999 calls. All in all we have about 1 visit a month on average.
Ambulance stations are 20 min (Arrochar) and 25 minutes (Inverary) away. Hospitals are ¾ hr of an hour away (Dunoon, Vale of Leven), larger referral centres in Paisley and Glasgow - 1 - 1 ½ hrs distance.
Lochgoilhead is a small village just off the A83, in the Argyll Highlands. close to the the Rest and be Thankful Pass, about 1hr driving distance to Glasgow International airport, 1:15hr to Glasgow, less than 2 hrs to Edinburgh. The Caledonian Sleeper to London has a station nearby (Arrochar, 20 mins of drive) with a daily direct train to London. Glencoe just over one hour (Skiing, climbing, hiking), Oban 1 ½ hrs, Loch Lomond 35 minutes (Luss). Easy access to the islands via Oban and Tarbert.
The village has a primary school, secondary schools are in Helensburgh and Dunoon. There is a church (CoS), several hotels and B&Bs, two out-door centres, holiday rental housing, shop, post office, pubs, cafe, boat rental and other leisure facilities (including a swimming pool and gym at the main hotel). There are ample options for outdoor activities on the water, on the hills and the surrounding countryside. Housing for sale and let is available, cheap and often of high quality and large size. The surrounding area is of outstanding natural beauty (Argyll Forest, Arrochar Alps, Loch Fyne, Loch Lomond), many out door centres, prize winning restaurants and other facilities.
We found that the villagers are fiercely protective of their doctors' privacy, time off and boundaries. The only just past CoViD-19 crisis has shown once again the strong support the practice enjoys within the community.
There is health board accommodation locally available (4 bedroom 2 public room house with garden) for rent. Commuting from Lomond area, Helensburgh or even Glasgow is possible.
The post is available as of now, is rated at 0.42 WTE and will be paid at a rate within the BMA Scotland salaried GP range, subject to negotiation.
